ELECTORAL HISTORY : She was first elected State Parliamentarian with
the ¨Nea Demokratia¨ Party in the 1981 elections and then Deputy
of Athens, 1st Constituency, in the 1985, 1989, 1990, 1993, 1996, 2000
and 2004 elections.
PARLIAMENTARY ACTIVITIES : From April 2000 until March 2004 4th Vice-President
of the House and Vice-President of the House's Institutional and Transparency
Committee. She has been a member of the Parliamentarian Standing Committees
on Cultural and Educational Affairs and on Public Administration, Public
Order and Justice and a member of the Committee for the Revision of
the Constitution.
On March 19, 2004 she was elected Speaker of the Hellenic Parliament.
POLITICAL AND PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES :
July to October 1989: Deputy Minister of National Education and Religious
Affairs
April 1990 to August 1991: Deputy Minister of Culture
August 1991 to December 1992: Minister of Culture
December 1992 to September 1993: Minister of Justice
She is a member of the Political Council of the ¨Nea Demokratia¨ Party.
She has studied Law at the University of Athens .
Mrs. Benaki has completed post-graduate studies in Germany and received
a Ph.D. in Penal Law from the University of Bonn . She has also done
research work at the Max Planck Institute of Foreign and International
Penal Law in Freiburg i/Br., Germany .
She has been a practicing Lawyer in Athens since 1962, handling mostly
criminal cases and a Professor of Penal Law at the Faculty of Law of
the University of Athens since 1978.
She is the editor of the Greek Journal for Penal Law (Poinika Chronika)
and the author of many books on Penal Law and numerous legal and political
articles.
