Married to Maria Rangousi and has a son and a daughter.
Profession: Retired Naval Officer.

Parliamentary activities

Elected MP (ND) for Athens A in the general elections of 1977, 1981, 1985, 1989 (June and November), 1990, and 1993; and for Athens B in the general elections of 1996 and 2000. Member of the Standing Committee on Educational Affairs.


Social activities

Prime Minister, 02-07-1989 to 12-10-1989 in the ND-Synaspismos coalition Government. Minister for Public Works, 10-05-1980 to 17-09-1981 and 17-09-1981 to21-10-1981; Minister for Foreign Affairs, 02-07-1989 to 12-10-1989; Minister for National Defence, 23-11-1989 to 13-02-1990; Minister for Tourism, 03-07-1989 to 12-10-1989 and 23-11-1989 to 13-02-1990; Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for the State, 11-04-1990 to 07-08-1991 and 07-08-1991 to 12-10-1993; and Minister for Culture, 11-04-1990 to 08-08-1991. Commanded the gunboat “Laskos” (1959-1960). Submarine commander (1963-1967). Resigned his commission on 22-04-1967 as a gesture of opposition to the military dictatorship. Arrested by the dictatorship authorities in July 1969, imprisoned and sent into exile. Served as Secretary General of the Greek Tourist Organisation (EOT) (1974-1977). Ran for the office of Mayor of Athens in 1982. Head of the ND Central Committee on Local Government (1982-1986). Headed the ND Election Committee in 1989, 1993 and 1996. Translated Selections from the Upanishads, a book of Hindu philosophy, into Greek in 1991, along with Mani, a work by Patrick Leigh Fermour, in 1973. Published (in Greek): Choros esti tes agoras (1994), and India: Another Way of Life (1994). He has been decorated with the gold cross of George I, the gold cross of the Phoenix, the Great Cross of Honour, and the Great Cross of Luxembourg.
